How can I get loose curls/waves using a flat iron?

Whenever I attempt to curl my hair with a flat iron, it always turns out of be a tight curl. I even try to clamp the hair at an angle, but it won't work. I tried to pull the iron down quickly also, but that just makes my hair poofy %26amp; messy.How can I get loose curls/waves using a flat iron?

You can not do that with that curling iron I have tried as well. I bought a great product several years ago from Sally Hansen beauty salon and its a three ring curling iron thing that makes your hair in waves, I LOVE IT :) Here is a pic of what it looks like.

you have to twist, turn while pulling down. Make sure your sections aren't too big. Too big may not curl it and smooth it out enough and make sure that they are not too small because the smaller sections tend to be tighter!!! Hope this helps some:-)

Curling your hair with a curling iron can be pretty difficult... Especially if you have one of those really big huge ones... I use a medium sized one. I basically hook the curling iron at the top of the strand that I'm trying to curl, then I try and twist the hair around it by turning it without moving it down at all, and while your turning it slowly point it upwards and hold it there for a few seconds ( or however long it takes to get it curled ) Then while it's still facing up, open the iron and let the strand of hair out ( try not to pull it down while letting it out, kind of let it fall naturally ) to keep it curly, I just don't brush it after I've curled it - lol - I know it's kind of confusing : ) It's much easier to actually show someone : ) Another way I see people curl their hair besides a curling iron is curlers ... I've never used them but my hair stylist does and her hair looks great! I have thick hair too, I've noticed that it's easier to curl my hair if it's a little on the dirty/oily side. Wash it the night before, but not the day of. Do it section by secion, pulling each section that you want to curl high above your head, hold it for a while, spray with hair spray, and then release. Anything Aveda is nice and nautral for the hair. It's expensive, but it wont dry your hair out or make it crispy.

Ok well about 3 inches below your ear, start curling the straightner upward and that should work. Also try Garnier Curl Shaping Mousse and only apply it to the ends. Yeah I have curled my hair with a flat iron before. When you do it properly it actually looks quite good.

First of all put some heat protecting product in your hair.

Then get your flat iron and lightly clamp the end of your hair in it, then twirl the flat iron around the rest of the hair. Depending on how you want the curls, i recommend to have the flat iron vertically straight up. Hold it there for about 10-15 seconds and then release the grip on the flat iron and let it just slip out of your hair, making sure you don't straighten the curls. Do this with the rest of your hair. When you've done that spray all your hair with a good quality hairspray. If you like you can put some hairspray in your hair before you curl you hair as well. And there you go easy, flat iron curls.

yeh, i've done it - i don't like the way it looks, its just creating waves like crimping, you're best just getting some tongs if you want actual curls.
yes!! as you can see from my pic... i did mine with a ghd flat straightning iron... it very simple. you need to take small strands of hair, lightly spay with hairspray, and then start at the top , dont clamp the straighnters so tightly round your hair, clasp the irons gently... then as you take the iron down the length of your hair turn the iron in a half cirlular direction and continue pulling the irons downwards..... and that my dear is how you curl your hair with a flat iron :)



and remember, practise make perfect!

Try using a curling iron or those heating things that are like heating irons but they look like a stick on a handle. Flat irons can curl but they weren't meant for curling and therefore won't give you curlier curls. Curling irons and 'stick on handle heating irons' were made for curling and therefore will give you curliest curls. depending on what kind of Straightener and hair type you have, hold and clamp for longer and also Spray each section of hair with good quality hairspray before curling.

I have thin hair too and used to have this problem as well. Make sure you always spray a heat protector first so you won't damage your hair and then turn your flat iron on to it's highest setting and wait for it to get reallllyyy hot. Then always curl with the curls turning away from your face it shapes it better. Lastly spray a lot of extra hold hair spray. GOOD LUCK!

hot rollers are great for long lasting curls. just roll the hair around the hot rollers and let them cool. then remove the rollers and use your fingers to style the hair. the other thing you could try is using a heat safe styling pray instead of hairspray when curling your hair. Aquage makes one called Beyond Body thermal styler and i think Biolage has one too. i have really fine hair and it works great on my hair.

You would use the flat iron almost the same as a curling iron. You just don't hold it there as long. When using either, always make sure you comb the chunck of hair you are about to curl. If you don't, it will be more poofy, and not as smooth. If you're using a flat iron, make sure it's a small one. To just curl the ends, put a styling mousse or spray in your hair while it's wet. After you dry it, comb out the pieces you want to curl, and curl it spiral style to approximately your chin. If you go higher than that, it won't look right. While your hair is in the curling iron, lightly spritz it with a flexible hold hair spray. Good-luck! If it doesn't work for you, explain it to a friend and have her do it! It depends on what type of flat iron you have. Their are several different types. However, I flat iron my hair on a regular basis. When you are flat ironing you hair and you want to add a bump or curl at the end make a C motion with the arm you are using to flat iron your hair. Start at the top and imagine making a c all the way to the end. It takes some getting use to. I do hav a suggestion to you. I don't know what you hair type is or how much or little you want to add heat to your hair. I would try this. If you want soft curls get some velcro rollers. They will give you the look you want and they will be uniform curls. They're not expensive. Roll your hair when it's almost dry and lightly spritz with hair spray. Leave them in for about an hour or till your hair is dry. When you take them out flip your hair over and shake out the curls. Presto... soft waves and curls.

What sizes are the curling iron? I'm guessing the small one is 1/2 inch and the big one is 1 1/2 inch? for your legnth of hair, you'll need a 3/4 inch or 1 inch, because the 1/2 inch will give you a poofball for hair, while the 1 1/2 inch will give you a bump instead of a curl.



There are many techniques to curl your hair, but heres how i do it:



apply 2-3 palmfuls of mousse to your hair, then blowdry your hair, then grab 1 inch sections of hair and run the curling iron halfway down the section of hair, roll up to the roots, push lightly on the clamp and run the iron down so that the ends are covered by the clamp, then roll up again. This will give you a more bouncy, even curl.



If you just want to curl the bottom, the run the iron all the way down to the ends of your hair,roll up, hold until the outer layer of hair is warm, let go and repeat.

Curling hair with a flat iron?

Okay, so I know how to curl my hair with a flat iron, but my question is if you can use a flat iron with a plate width of 1 1/4';



I really want to buy either the Corioliss Pro Fix in Pink (1';), or the Corioliss Pro V in Hot Pink (1 1/4';). The only thing that is really making me think about which one to buy is a) the first one doesn't have any heat settings, and the website said it goes to 410 F! (even though when I've bought drugstore brand styling tools, I always have to use the highest setting) and b) The second one is a bit bigger than an inch, and customers say the inch is better for curling hair (which I really want to be able to do).



My hair is very fine and wavy, but for some reason it's really tough to style. I really need help decided which one to get.

Just wanted to let you know that there is a new iron on the market now,it's called the In Styler by Conair,it's like two irons in one,one side is a straightener and the other side is for curling your hair,now why didn't someone think of this in the first place? I don't have a curling iron but sometimes i want to curl it with my flat iron, but i have not found a very effective technique. My hair is kind of thin and medium length. I want nice, semi-loose curls, not tight or too loose. And a technique that's fairly easy to do. Sometimes I curl my hair with my straightener. Its more wavy than curly actually. I use about an inch wide straightener. So start at the top, loosely put the hair between the straightener and twist it around 180 degrees horizontally and at an angle slowly slide the flat iron down the length of your hair. I always put the heat up all the way just to make sure my hair does what I want it to. Its actually a simple technique. You'll just have to play around with it to figure out what works best with your hair.

You take a strand of hairs and do the same as if your were gonna straighten it and twist the flat iron around so your hair is around the flat iron and then when you've doe that you slowly pull down the flat iron as if you were syraightning it!!! Very easy

no. (at least, no way that I can think of) since you say your hair is permed, i assume it's curly. so wet it, blow dry it straight with a large round brush, then mist it with water and coat a small section with gel. braid this section really tight and secure it with an elastic. repeat until your head is done, then let it air dry. once it's dry, take out the elastics and use your fingers to seperate the braids, don't brush it!Can you crimp your hair with a flat iron or a curling iron?

You could try it with a curling iron. It will be a lot of work though. You would have to alternate how you use the curling iron. Just hold the curling iron in one spot for a couple seconds, and then move down the piece of hair, and hold the curling iron on it backwards for a couple seconds. Make sure that you don't curl your hair at all when crimping it, because that would add unnecessary volume. Good Luck!

put the ghd at the top of your hair, hold it closed and then twist forwards and pull downwards at the same time. It took me a bit of practise before I could actually do it but it is easy once you get the hang of it. Try not to look in the mirror when you are doing it as that will just confuse you.



You can do it 2 ways. To get a loop you start at the top of the hair and twist it around and down the hair strand until you get to the bottom, making sure the straightener is always in the middle of the loop. To get curls, you straighten a strand then when you get to the bottom just wrap that strand around the straightener until you get to the top, hold for 3 seconds then uncurl the hair off the straightener 鈥?this should give you Annie style curls. Make sure you use lots of product though so the curls don鈥檛 drop too much.

First you need to put a protective serum on your hair so it doesn't burn your hair (also do this when straightening). Next, take EVEN sections and spray a little bit of hair spray before you curl it so it will last longer.

****Helpful Tip- Section off hair by using clips so you can work with one section at a time.

what kind of curls are you going for? i usually do mine in loose natural spirals. to get that look i use a smaller curling iron (not sure what size barrel) I start with the bottom layer.. doesn't need to be too much on the bottom... but use an angle with the curling iron for each side you want to angle the curls to curl back from your face. then just time it for each piece, i do about 10 seconds each for mine. then do the middle layer and then the top adding more curls to each layer of hair. if your hair tends to not hold then use a light coat of hairspray careful to not make your hair ';crunchy';

You can use some rollers using setting lotion and allow them to dry then spray some hairspray/spritz on them or you can curl your hair with a curling iron then spray some holding spray or spritz on them.

It depends what flattening iron they use.

In videos they used a ';curved'; flat iron that also makes curls and waves and flips.



Most flattening irons are in more of a rectangular shape. And the only thing it does is make a dent in your hair. and it looks like an overly hairsprayed flip.



If you really want a flat iron that can also curl your hair, get one that is curved.

Well, it works better!

I tried to do that yesterday without straightening ( I have wavy hair) and it just gets annoying...I can't really explain it but its tougher for me to do so without having it straight. Or, I just straighten it a bit since I dont want really damaged hair.

It still works, but it's a bit more difficult in my opinion, since it already has a bit or waves/curl in it.

No, don't straighten it before or it will be very hard to curl. Just run the flat iron down a small piece of hair, pull it taught and twist it as you get near the bottom. It should have a flip in it after that.

It would definitely help to straighten it first. That way you have complete control over what the curls will look like. However, I'd only straighten it if you have significantly curly hair. Like if your hair is just wavy, I wouldn't bother since you'll be going over it anyways. On the other hand, if you have ringlets, then you'll want to straighten it.

When your hair is damp from washing, blow dry the top part (that you don't want curled), take a large round or cushion brush, and comb thru your hair, and where you want it to start curling, twist the brush and blow dry against it. It will create very large curls that are very soft.



The only way I know of to curl with socks, I haven't done it for years, and it didn't work all that well, but you take a long tube sock, about the same length as what you want to curl. with your hair damp from washing, comb thru it till it's all uniform, and lay strips of hair on a sock lengthwise, with the toe at the end of your hair. roll from the toe upward, and when you get to the top of the sock, you pull the band down and around the rest of it, sort of like how you fold them, wrap itself around it . Do that to your whole head of hair, could take 10 or so socks, and then with a hot blow dryer, hold the air on each one for at least 1 and a half minutes ,to get it hot, and to dry your hair. when done with the blow dryer, leave socks on for at leat 10 minutes without moving to let the curl set. gently, unroll each one, and apply a finishing spray to your curls, to keep them from straigtening.

use bendy rollers, you can leave them in over night and wont harm your hair or you could use straightners
Well heres what you do. Wash your hair well and towel dry thoroughly. Then blow dry to get a little bit of the excess moisture out. Add some mousse or light gel, then brush your hair and divide it into sections, enough sections so that you can take one section and twist it tight and pin it to your head. The twist will make it so that when you take it down it looks wavy and curly, very cute by the way! Keep doing this until your hair is all pinned up and twisted to make loose curly waves. I do this alot when I am bored and it looks really cute and natural when your done! Let me know if it works for you!

its real weird and hard to explain. my advice would be not to do it cause unless you are a super expert, they come out real funky. just use a curling iron.
starting from the top of the hair, put a smooth section of hair into the irons,

hold it in firm but very gentle,

pull the iron away outwards at a 180 degree angle,

(this way the hair is just about wrapped in the correct way)

now just firmly and smoothly slide down wards.

i have that iron. it doesn't work for curling, I've tried it. you should get a chi iron. they are made specially for curling and for straiting. they're a bit expensive, but beauty is worth it. plus i don't think my wet to dry works that well for wet to dry.

okie first u section ur hair into 3 parts. the crown,middle and bottom.

curl the bottom part first while the other 2 is clipped on ur head.

then, take a lil bit of hair and hold it wiff one hand while the other one is holding the flat iron. and then, clip the hair with the iron and turn it inward/ towards u. after that make a 180 turn/rotation. then just gently pull down. and it should be curly. ^^ and if u r still confuse just go to youtube. search ur question and click on the first video made by: reiberry. good luck. ;3

you dont because it damages your hair. duHh.
The wet2straight doesn't damage your hair. it has a built in steamer that steams excess moisture out but locks in what you need. and think about it. blow drying AND straigtening is 2 heat processes. With the wet2straight your hair is only going through one heat process, so this is actually BETTER for your hair. I have used it for over a year now, it works GREAT and believe me my hair is in better shape then before I started using it.

After you wash your hair, blot it with a towel and then comb it. then just section your hair and begging at the roots pull the straigtener out a 90 degree angle. do this all over your head. and dont forget to use a thermal protector before any heat styling.

Making curls with a straightener is easy! If you're not very experienced with using a hair straightener for curling, defs go for the curler. It'll be much easier for you. What type of hair spray are you using? Cheap brands don't have much hold factor and hold to much grease. I recommend the hairspray Bedhead by TIGI makes. Look it up on the site. Hope this helps.

It is kinda complicated. You dont want to over curl because then your krimping it! Do a like 30 degree's curl and then it should turn out pretty good!! I myself dont suggest using a curling iron though... just buy a curling iron!!! straighteners are used for straightening not curling!
You have to make sure you use one that is designed to straighten and curl. Take a small lock of hair, hold the ends between the iron, and wrap the hair around the whole iron. Hold for a few seconds and let go.
When you get to the end of the strands just roll the flat iron up or under for the desired effect. It does take practice to achieve the look you want.

Straighten it until you want to start the curl and then squeeze hard and turn your flat iron 270 degrees so that the ends of your hair are facing the ceiling. Pull down and go all the way to the ends of your hair. Repeat.

Take about an inch of your hair and put your flat iron at the top of the group of hair (near your scalp) and curl slowly as you make your way down your group of hair. Repeat with different pieces and hair spray. Hope that helps, that's how I do it.
its probaly easier to work on straight hair, so straighten it first.

then grab a small chunk of hair - about an inch - and grab it with the straightener starting near the top then as you slide it down slowly turn the straightener foward, and if all goes well .. voila! nice curls. =]

Your straightener has to be pretty skinny in order for it to work well.

I just had this done to my hair for a wedding %26amp; it looked GREAT!

You really just treat it as a curling iron. You place you hair in it, near your scalp %26amp; than slowly curl it as you are pulling it out through the length of your hair.

May take a few times doing it before you perfect it, b ut it really does look awesome!

Also use hairspray or whatever you have to help keep it in place!

i clamp it at the root of my hair and twist and pull slowly down.

however i was told you should twist it both towards and away form you on different sections of hair to give it a more natural look about it :S

sounds like your hair is baby fine. you need to use products for fine hair.
put a little bit of jel before putting curling iron or spray on your hair before putting curling iron
i hear you are supposed to use hair that has not been washed in 24 hours, somehow the natural oils help keep curls locked in, fresh clean hair is actually stripped clean and doesn't cooperate with hair products so well.
put gel in it and make it ';dirty'; with hairspray before you put them in.

When I use any iron, I hairspray my hair LIGHTLY with

not-so-strong hairspray. Then, I curl my hair like normal,

and when I'm done, I hairspray it all over again.

you should try rollers overnight (have shower first) If u put curlers in put jell in first and mabye hairspray after, but NO hairspray before.

Okay, all I can really help you with is the curling question. This is how I curl my hair-and it holds all day.

Begin by applying a styling gel, mousse or styling spray. Your curls will form better if you use good quality products.



Clip your hair back in multiple sections. Release one section and brush or comb it to remove any knots or tangles. Spray lightly with a soft-hold hairspray if your hair is very fine and doesn't hold curls well.



Begin with the undersection of your hair, working your way up to the top. Twist a small section of your hair with your hands for spiral curls, or take a flat, larger section for loose curls.



Curl desired hair



Roll the iron up and hold it for about 10 seconds.



Open the curling iron and release the curls. Proceed with other sections until all areas have been curled.



Flip your head and shake out the curls, then style your hair with your fingers.



Spray with a light hold hair spray to keep your curls in place.

Well with the straightening part... do you use a clip to put the top layer of the hair up, while you do the under layer? If not this will help tons. Also straighting your hair for 7 years can do some damage, hopefully your using some pre-straightner product (can't think what its called :P but i use it, and love it) Maybe your straightner is old. I love my straightner I got at a salon, cost me $120 but is nearly imposible to burn your self, and its better for your hair. As for curling, with an iron, when your hair is wraped around the iron use a light hairspray, dove works great, and spray a few sprays, once all finished use a heavier hair spray, there are tons of products out there for different things, i would go to a salon and ask a proffesional, they will be able to help you tons!

You need a 1'; that's curved to curl your hair. A 2'; is too big.
I don't think you will be able to curl it , but basically just flip it up or curl under (just the ends). Since the outside of the iron doesn't get hot then when you twirl the flat iron around your hair there will be sections getting no heat to hold the curl. Hope the helps!
I have a 2'; as well as a 1';. In my experience, the 1'; does work better.. and I'd recommend that you go with one that has a curved edge so your curls would look nicer and rounder.

With the 2';, you would have to have pretty long hair to get the nice curls.. it's a bit harder if you have shorter hair.

You don't need a certain size to curl your hair. All straighteners are capable of it, but in advance it's really tricky to do. I have problems with it and have been trying for a couple months now, I sort of gave up and I have the Chi. Basically get one of the really really good brands such as the one I had mentioned or even some conairs are fairly good, then look on youtube for tutorials. Theres some girls on there that make it look SIMPLE!
Buy the smallest one you can get, but straighting your hair is not good for it, don't do it too much. Hope it turns out okay.
my straightener is about an inch and a half in diameter, it works fine for curling hair. the only thing you needa worry about is that the outside is rounded, because as im sure you know, you twist your hair around the outside of it as you straighten it in order to make it curl, so as long as it's round when its shut, youre good.

To curl your hair with a Flat Iron, you grab a small section of your hair and put the iron at the top of the section. Slowly twist and pull until you get to the end of your hair. You may want to do that a few times to get a nice curl.Hair Curling with Flat Iron Question?

1. section your hair getting the top layer out of teh way

2. grab a small section of hair and grab your straigtener and clamp teh peice of hair

twisth it all the way around and make sure that your straighterner is held vertically not horizontally.

3. pull lightly all the way down and you will then have a perfect curl

4. Work your way all along the bottom layer and continue working up until you think its enough
try to use a flat iron and and curl it
as for curling it think twice about a curling iron, I'd use a flat iron just because its better for you hair, its quicker and easier.

Hi it's really difficult at first and what the vids on youtube don't say is that the curlier the hair, the longer you have to hold the flat irons on your hair.



1) Pick a strand of hair

2) Curl the hair around the flat iron in the direction away from your head.

3) Keep curling until the flat iron is close to your head.

4) Hold for about 10 seconds.

5) Pull the iron out of your hair slowly (the slower you do this, the curlier your hair will be).

Pulling the iron out of your hair is exactly like straightening because you pull the iron straight down.

Twist small parts of your hair tightly before you put it under your irons, I couldn't say how long for because i don't know how hot your irons are but you'll find out soon enough.
To do the ';grip and twist'; that most you tube vids seem to show, the irons need to get warm at the least on the outside of the gripping part as well as the plate itself. If the outside of the irons don't get warm (some are specifically designed not to), then it is next to impossible!



You can get curling tongs pretty cheaply now in the big supermarkets (under 拢10 I believe) and to be honest it would probably be worth getting a set of these rather than struggling!

It may be your' straighteners! You need to grasp hair near to the root, then turn the irons 90 degrees, slowly pull them away from your' head (not upwards!) Hope this works x
Do like you arestraightening and put your hair through the plates. then take the ends and wrap it around the plates. then press on the plates while simotaneously pulling your ends downards. here im sure i dont make sense. watch this

Im getting married in about 2 months. I am going crazy with all of the stuff to do. But i need a good hairstyle for the honeymoon and stuff.i have like wavyish hair, and sometimes i wanna make it curly. my friend told me if i straighten it first, then i can curl it or make it into beautiful big waves (my natural waves are just messy) with the straightening or flat iron. First you want to use a heat protectant on your hair and if it gives the added advantage of be a defrizzer that's great. MAke sure to comb it through your hair so it can protect it all.



Then section your hair into two(or if you have a lot of hair three) parts so you can get to the hair underneath.



Next take a small section of the bottom most layer and wrap the hair around the barrel of the curling Iron. Do not twist the barrel. IF you have thin hair hold it on there for 2-5 but no longer if you have thicker hair hold it on for 2 to 3 seconds longer.



Next release the curl but do not just let it bounce down it will loose all the curl. Hold it gently in your hand next to your head until it cools down. It should only take a few seconds.



repeat until all your hair is curled.



Last if your curls fall out easy use a light holding hair spray.HELP!!! How can I curl my hair with a flat iron?

does your straightener have floating irons? if it does this is what you do:

-take a small section of hair that you what to curl

-comb all the knots out

-get the straightener and run it about 1/4 down the section of hair (to get the top of it straight)

-twist the straightener 360 degrees i the drection you want the curl

-hold it there for a couple of seconds

-release the straightener and then twist your finger around the curl

How to curl your hair with a straightener:



1. Shampoo and condition your hair as normal. ';Blow-dry using a large round brush or paddle brush keeping the nozzle following the brush down the direction of the hair. This closes the cuticle and ensures you start with a smooth, clean canvas,'; explains Nader.



2. Apply a thermal protector (such as TCI Thermal Protector, $19.95). Tip: avoid oil-based products as they can weigh your hair down.



3. Section your hair, leaving the pieces at the nape of your neck out 鈥?this will be your starting point.



4. Take a two-centimetre piece, and place the iron as close to the roots as possible. Slide it through the hair slowly in a downwards motion, simultaneously turning the iron . ';The work is all in the wrist,'; says Nader. ';[Ensure] the movement is very fluid and in one long sweep 鈥?not too jerky.'; He also gives this good advice: the quicker you slide the iron the looser the curl, and the slower you slide the iron, the tighter the curl.



5. Continue working on the rest of your hair, one section at a time from back to front. Remember: the thinner the section of hair, the more intense and longer-lasting the results will be. Once you get to the front, be sure to wind the sections of hair towards your face (to avoid an '80s style). And don't curl shorter fringes 鈥?blow-dry with a large round brush instead.



6. To finish, use your fingers to comb your hair, raking them through to separate the curls. ';Use a good flexible hold hairspray to keep the curl longer,'; suggests Nader.



Still struggling? Adopt the old adage: ';If at first you don't succeed, try again.'; Once you get the hang of it, you'll be wondering why you ever thought it was tricky!
